What is Scalp Cooling?

Scalp cooling is a technique that uses a cold cap or device to cool the scalp before, during, and after chemotherapy treatment.

Cooling the scalp can help protect the hair follicles from damage and reduce hair loss.

Vasoconstriction

Vasoconstriction is the narrowing of blood vessels, which results in the reduction of blood flow through them.

During scalp cooling, vasoconstriction happens as a natural response to the cold temperatures applied to the scalp, causing the blood vessels in the scalp to constrict.

Cooling the scalp can reduce blood flow by 20–40%, which can limit the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the hair follicles.

CELLS WITHOUT COOLING
CELLS WITH COOLING

Reduced Cell Division

Chemotherapy drugs can affect both cancer cells and other rapidly dividing cells in the body—including hair cells.

Scalp cooling reduces the rate at which cells divide and become less likely to be targeted by chemotherapy drugs.

This helps protect the hair follicles and can reduce hair loss during treatment.

ACTIVE TRANSPORT
PASSIVE DIFFUSION

Reduced Drug Uptake

Chemotherapy drugs can enter cells through two processes: active transport via membrane proteins and passive diffusion.

The low temperatures slow down active transport and make the cell membrane less permeable to drugs.

Cooling the scalp can suppress both of these processes and lead to a reduction in the drugs that reach the hair follicle.

COOLING SLOWS DOWN RATE
REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES

Reduced Metabolic Activity

Scalp cooling during chemotherapy slows down the metabolic rate of cells. Reduced metabolic activity can affect cellular processes, including oxidation. Oxidation involves the generation of harmful substances called reactive oxygen species.

Slowing down these processes through scalp cooling may reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy drugs. Protecting the cells in the hair follicles from damage can help mitigate the risk of hair loss as a side effect of chemotherapy.

How Did We Start?

Our story starts like most: with an idea.

Spring 2020
THE IDEA:

During Spring 2020, Evan Fisler was taking a Biomedical Heat and Mass Transfer course offered at Gannon University. COVID-19 caused this course to continue online and material from this course led Fisler to think of ways to cool the scalp. Throughout research, scalp cooling can mitigate hair loss during chemotherapy treatment.

This led to pitching a scalp cooling project for the senior design capstone course for Gannon University on August 7th, 2020.
Fall 2020
FORMING A TEAM:

The senior design team was formed throughout Fall of 2020. Individuals from the course could rank what projects interested them the most and allowed them to be placed into projects of interest. Justo Hernandez joined the scalp cooling project team late Fall 2020 after his original project group dissipated.

SUCCESS AT THE BEEHIVE
INNOVATIVE SHOWCASE:

Our scalp cooling project was chosen to compete in the 2021 Beehive Innovative Showcase. Our team created and delivered a compelling PowerPoint presentation that showcased the findings from our comprehensive research and experimentation efforts. After winning the showcase, we entered the Erie Technology Incubator (ETI). From this contest, we received a $1,000 award.

FILING A PROVISIONAL
PATENT APPLICATION:

Glacier Scalp Cooling filed a provisional patent with MMI Intellectual Property on March 8th, 2022. Glacier Scalp Cooling recently renewed our provisional patent with MMI Intellectual Property for Wearable Temperature Regulated Cooling System on March 7th, 2023. The U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. is 63/488,932.
